Winter Break Closing Procedures

24 Hour Quiet Hours

Friday, December 7, 2018 at 9:00P through Saturday, December 15, 2018 12:00P.

Residence halls and apartments will close on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 12:00P (noon).

Residence halls and apartments will re-open for move-in Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20, 2019 from 9:00A – 8:00P

Residence Halls

Procedures for:
Columbia, Elwell, Luzerne, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland and Schuylkill Halls

Before you leave for Winter Break make sure that:

  1. Your room is clean and emptied of trash
  2. Windows are closed and locked
  3. Shades are pulled down
  4. Lights are turned off
  5. Everything in your room is unplugged, including aquariums and your refrigerator
  6. Micro-fridge is empty, defrosted, dried out and the door is left propped open
  7. If applicable, leave heat on and set to 70°

Procedures for:
Soltz Hall

Before you leave for Winter Break make sure that:

  1. Your suite is clean and emptied of all trash
  2. Windows are closed and locked
  3. Window shades are pulled down
  4. Lights are turned off
  5. Everything is unplugged, except refrigerator
  6. Close and lock bedroom doors
  7. Heat is on and set at 70°

Apartment Complexes

Procedures for:
Jessica Kozloff, Montgomery Place, Mt. Olympus Apartments and Kile

Before you leave for Winter Break, you must do the following:

  1. Clean your apartment
  2. Collect trash from all rooms and take out the garbage
  3. Wash all dirty dishes prior to your departure
  4. Close and lock windows and pull down shades
  5. Flush the toilet(s) and make sure they have stopped filling with water before you leave, to avoid an overflow.
  6. Close and lock bedroom doors
  7. Turn the heat setting to 70° so the pipes won’t freeze. Make sure it is set to heat and not air conditioning.
  8. Turn off all lights.
  9. Kile Residents: Move everything away from the heat by 2 feet for fire safety purposes
  10. Last person to leave must make sure the front door is closed and locked.

Please Note: Residence Life staff will be conducting final room/apartment inspections once the buildings are closed. University facilities staff will enter rooms and apartments during break for routine building maintenance.


Moving to a different location for Spring?

If you will be living in a new housing assignment for the Spring semester, please do the following:

  1. You can leave items in your new housing assignment, if current occupants agree.
  2. Do not unpack. Please leave everything in boxes/containers and labeled with your name.
  3. If you can’t move your belongings to your new housing assignment, you must take everything home.
  4. In January when the University re-opens, students will check-in and have their BUID activated for the new housing assignment.

Not returning for Spring?

If you are not returning for the Spring semester, please do the following:

  1. Complete a housing release form. Failure to complete the form will result in a bill.
  2. If you are withdrawing or transferring complete all paperwork for the Registrar’s Office online.
  3. Apartment students must check-out by returning their mailbox key in the Express Check-Out Envelope to the appropriate location listed in their closing procedures.
  4. Failure to check out incorrectly with result in a $35.00 fee.
  5. If you decide not to return to the University over break, notify the Residence Life Office AND the Registrar’s Office by January 8, 2018 and return all keys.

Interim Winter Housing

If you are not returning for the Spring semester, please do the following:

  1. Students who need interim housing during Winter Break may stay at a cost.
  2. Students eligible for interim housing include: international students, students taking Winter session courses, students who work on or off campus, athletes, and students who require 12-month housing.
  3. All other students will not have access during this break.
  4. In order to retain housing, you must complete an Interim Housing Form or your access will be turned off. Your roommates will be notified if you plan to have guests.
  5. During break, if you encounter any problems, emergencies, or maintenance issues, please contact the on-call staff person at 570-336-8551 or BUPD at 570-389-2211.
  6. There will be no services (snow removal, general maintenance) from December 22, 2018 – January 1, 2019.
  7. There is no shuttle service or mail delivery during the entire break.
